Strange Things Are Happening by Richard Norris

 So, I just recently finished this book by Richard Norris called "Strange Things are Happening."

I first learned of Richard after I bought the album "Evolver" by his band The Grid (sometimes just posted as Grid).

After reading the liner notes I had a bit of a "huh?" moment. The two names (Dave Ball from Soft Cell) on this CD were the same names on another project I had been listening to, Jack The Tab.

Which was a UK acid house project formed by Genesis P-Orridge (s/he is her/e).

This is a really great book about Richard's journey through life and music, and transformation on reflection and healing.

What I really thought was amazing is the fact that almost every band/musician he mentions, was friends with, or worked with were artists I liked or was already listening to without knowing he was in the mix until reading this book. Every chapter, for me, had a "well I'll be..." moment at least once.

First, it starts off with him meeting up with Bill Drummond who is famous for the group KLF/JAMs, etc. Which was a group I was big into from maybe 1990. 

From that first chapter I knew I was in for good read.

I'm not good at writing reviews, but trust me, if you grew up through the late 70's into 80's listening to punk music and Zine culture then through the 90's getting into dance music and raves then this is the book for you.

So, I think Jeff Foxworthy would prolly gain a wider audience if he embraced underground culture as much as he did 5th graders.

So, walking back to Patrick Melcher's place, from Echo Park in LA on February 15th, I came across this pack of dope azz cigz, bro.

Rave Krisp●E-tards...

So, B in the D on May 30th, 1997 I went to a rave, in Chicago, with mai friend Destry. We got there KNDA early, the place was in a sketchy area on the South Side in an old Church/Community Centre/School building. I really don't know waht it was.

I remember that there was a shit load of stairs to get to the party on the 2nd floor, they only had one open door to the fire escape for air andone fan at that door. There were tons of Kandi Ravers because I think that was the zenith of Kandi Kulture.
Lots of E-tards walking around like zombies, sitting against the walls passed out or rubbing on soemone special [for that night].
There was even a rumour [because an ambulance showed up] that Paul Johnson died because his wheelchair rolled down all those stairs, which I'm pretty sure Destry started.
Oh yeah... and Keoki was a no show, and even though Keoki didn't spin we still had a blast, enjoyed the music, got home safe.

After watching Party Monster a few years ago I understood why he might not have shown up that night.

As of the end of this post I am currently listening to "Brainspinner" by Johann [Bley] from the "Trip Trough Sound 2" compilation, released in 1998 on Blue Room Released.

Johann Bley played drums on the song "Achtung!" by KMFDM on their 1990 album "Naïve."

Wrex Cook Has 1/4 Pike Fever...

So, this is a friend of mine, Wrex Cook, I met him and his main squeeze, Kim, a few years back while visiting other friends in Arizona.
They recently moved to Oxford, Mississippi and immediately got 1/4 pike fever and built this on the back patio slab.
While there they met soem dewdz to skate with, they run a blog called Trife Street and are always skating and building soemthing rad.

Diet Tripping...

So, one thing I don't like about going on road trips is the fact that there aren't that many healthy food options that you get accustomed to living in a diverse city. Usually when you're on the road these highways run straight through the thick of the country.

As you can see in the picture above, I have a jug of water, a jug of lemonade, a beef stick, a bag of deep fried salted peanuts, and a bag of Flavor Twists. I think the only healthy thing I had going for me was the bottle of Joint Juice I drank on the daily, my B12 tablet, and Cinnamon capsules. 

You can't really drive 5000 miles and just eat apples, oranges, and narnas.

Okay, maybe YOU can.

Nobody has heard of a "Garden Burger" at a Subway (in them parts) so you end up having to get a sub of all vegetables, and that's about the healthiest thing you can eat on the road, problem is, you aren't traveling alone. You have 3 other dewdz with you who all want soemthing dif.

I mean, sure, there was this one place that was the "Home of the Laguna Burger," but You're better off just grabbing apples, oranges, and narnas off the front counter at the QT or Circle K.

Forget about finding Vegan options on the road. If you go to a restaurant, ask if they have anything Vegan, people start looking at you with a blank or misunderstood stare like Vegan is a disease or soemthing.
When you do decide to stop for food other than at the mini-mart at the gas station one wants Taco Bellyache, one wants McDowell's, one wants Vegan, and me? Well, I'll find soemthing at anyone of those places. If you ask me nothing beats a Spicy Chickers Combo from Wedny's with a DP.

So, my goal on this trip was to eat healthy while on the road and in LA, let's just say that all went in the shitter. Marfa is Vegan so I have no prob going that route. It's the two other guys that were afraid of it it seemed like. You can't really go wrong with a Pita place. (which everyone passed on except me)
